Utilizing the highest level of expertise in the field of ophthalmology, R-Tech Ueno is making advances into the development of new drugs that target ophthalmic diseases with no currently effective medications, such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Our goal is to cultivate a new market by swiftly and efficiently commercializing not just the drugs developed in our company, but also the promising ideas born of academia and venture corporations. As regards the actual development, we are aggressively engaged in joint and commissioned research with major institutions including universities of the United States and Japan.

R-Tech Ueno's originally developed Rescula® Eye Drops is a glaucoma/ocular hypertension treatment drug that was the first in the world to utilize Prostone. Rescula® Eye Drops have pharmacological activities as the Prostone-type ion channel openers, giving it the ability to not only lower intraocular pressure, but also sustain optic nerve preservation (in vitro) and improve the ocular blood flow of those suffering normotensive glaucoma. Since it was first put on the market in 1994, over 500 thousand patients have used the drug across 45 different countries, making Rescula® a firm long-seller.

On top of manufacturing and supplying Rescula® Eye Drops to Santen Pharmaceuticals with which R-Tech Ueno has the marketing license contracts, we conduct our own corporate MR promotion and marketing activities. By offering the latest information on Rescula® Eye Drops from the point of view of the developer, R-Tech Ueno contributes to the evidence-based treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

R-Tech Ueno prides itself on its technology and expertise in the pharmaceutical developments, which is not limited to the field of ophthalmology. By delivering development expertise to the research divisions of venture corporations and pharmaceutical companies which target the development of new drug products, we come closer to realizing clinical application of those drugs.

From such cooperation in research and development at the pre-clinical studies stage, we are able to produce sample drugs for clinical studies, prepare the data for NDA (New Drug Application) and furthermore, until we reach commercial production of the product, we foster far-reaching business alliances. Correspondence regarding development and manufacturing is not limited to Japan, but extends to the American and European marketplace as well.

For example, R-tech Ueno carried out the pre-clinical studies and manufacturing of AMITIZA®, Chronic Idiopathic Constipation treatment drug which was developed by Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc (Bethesda, MD, US) and was approved by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) in January 2006.  R-Tech Ueno now exclusively manufactures the AMITIZA® capsules.
